Artist Statement
Ashley chose to focus on donuts as her subject matter because it is something that everyone can relate to. She strives to create artwork that relinquishes control to the viewer. As the artist, Ashley finds it more important for the audience to develop a personal connection to each piece rather than imposing her own perspective upon it.
By allowing the viewer to control the narrative of the piece, the donuts act as a whimsical driving force that connects the entire series together. Instead of just painting random objects or animals that everyone could relate to, donuts add a fun twist! She has yet to meet a person who has looked at her work and not smiled. It is practically impossible not to smile!
Ashley considers herself to be an optimistic and friendly person and although she does not have connections to any of her paintings, she likes to think her personality shines throughout the entire collection.
